Buddhism in India

Around 2600 years back, Siddhartha Goutama Buddha was born in India and attained Supreme Nibbana with his own effort. His teaching spread widely to a greater extent in India and beyond. Gradually, here in India, the Dhamma taught by the Buddha declined as the chain link between teachers and students was broken unlike in countries like Sri Lanka, Burma and Thailand.

As per Bhikkhu. Bodhi Dhamma’s research and as for as experience goes, 99% of the bhikkhus in India are not following the Right Sila (Precepts). According to the Buddha, only the one who follows 227 precepts (sila) is a Bhikkhu. Otherwise, he is called a ‘du-sila’ bhikkhu.
Because of this deteriorating condition, some Bhikkhus from Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, with good intention, have tried to bring and re-establish Buddha Dhamma back in India. However, it’s our responsibility at the same time to analyse and understand if their teachings and practices match with the Suttas or Buddha’s Teaching as originally taught.

In the past Dr.B R Ambedkar, Sri S N Goenkaji and various Bhikkhus have attempted and provided a platform to Buddha’s Teachings in India. Now we are trying to build upon that base to establish pure Buddha’s Teaching via Early Buddhist Teachings Thervada Forest Monastery. We in EBT follow the Theravada tradition of “Dhamma Vinaya” as it is taught in the Suttas by the Buddha.
